発光層は単独の物質を含み得るが、より一般的には、単数または複数のゲスト化合物をドープされたホスト物質から成り、発光は、主としてドーパントによってもたらされ、任意の色であり得る。発光層のホスト物質は、以下に定義する電子輸送物質、上記に定義した正孔輸送物質、または他の物質もしくは正孔－電子の再結合を支持する物質の組み合わせであり得る。

The light-emitting layer can be comprised of a single material, but more commonly consists of a host material doped with a guest compound or compounds where light emission comes primarily from the dopant and can be of any color. The host materials in the light-emitting layer can be an electron-transporting material, as defined below, a hole-transporting material, as defined above, or another material or combination of materials that support hole-electron recombination.
