条件を満たす

なお、図１０（ａ）に示す透過率曲線と同様の曲線は、電圧無印加時に光学的等方性を示し電圧印加により異方性が発現する物質として、以下の条件を満たすものを用いると得ることができる。すなわち、Ｒ、Ｇ、Ｂを示す時のそれらの色の中心波長をλ（Ｒ）、λ（Ｇ）、λ（Ｂ）（典型的にはそれぞれ６５０ｎｍ、５５０ｎｍ、４５０ｎｍ付近）とし、それら波長の時の屈折率をｎ（Ｒ）、ｎ（Ｇ）、ｎ（Ｂ）とすると、
ｎ（Ｒ）／λ（Ｒ） ＜ ｎ（Ｇ）／λ（Ｇ） ＜ ｎ（Ｂ）／λ（Ｂ）
という条件である。

A similar curve to the one in Figure 10 (a) is obtainable from a substance which is optically isotropic in the absence of applied voltage and becomes anisotropic under applied voltage and which also meets the following condition: n (R)/λ(R) < n (G)/λ(G) < n (B)/λ(B) where A (R), A (G), and A (B) are the middle wavelengths for R, G, and B (typically about 650 nm, 550 nm, and 450 nm respectively), and n (R), n (G), and n (B) are the refractive indices of the substance at those wavelengths.
